Pain stems from many causes, and all people experience it differently. It might last for only a few days, or be ongoing for weeks or even months. You might feel it in your head, your hand, your heel, or your hip. There are many ways to address it, and one approach that combines multiple strategies is comprehensive pain management. (1)
What Is Comprehensive Pain Management?
Comprehensive pain management is an approach that can address both short- and long-term pain. (1) Effective comprehensive pain treatment starts with a detailed assessment, including pain diagnoses and any current or past psychiatric conditions. A treatment plan is then developed, taking into account physical, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual challenges. (2)
Because this form of pain management requires different types of expertise, various professionals are often involved, including doctors, physical therapists, social workers, mental healthcare providers, and spiritual counselors. (2) The goal is not to experiment with different treatments, but to tailor a plan that addresses an individual’s specific needs.
What’s Included in Comprehensive Pain Management?
By definition, a comprehensive pain management strategy encompasses multiple approaches, which could include any combination of the following.
Physical Treatment
If the pain can be related to an underlying physical condition like an injury or disease, treatment should include methods to resolve those physical concerns. Treatments could include surgery, injections, or other strategies as appropriate. You might also consider alternative therapies such as massage, acupuncture, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) to help manage pain. (2)
Depending on the cause of pain, physical therapy may also be a recommended approach as part of a comprehensive pain management strategy. A tailored treatment plan could include exercises to improve range of motion, build strength, and reduce pain. Finally, medication may be prescribed to address both pain and depression or anxiety caused by pain. (2)
Emotional and Cognitive Treatment
In addition to treating the physical body, comprehensive pain management also incorporates psychotherapeutic and cognitive behavioral therapy to address the emotional challenges of living with pain. (2) For people suffering from chronic pain, cognitive behavioral therapy provides tools to help manage it, including:
- Education about pain
- Behavior changes
- Methods for relaxation
- Stress coping skills
- Lifestyle changes
- Nutrition and movement
Incorporating cognitive behavioral therapy into a pain management strategy can help support overall well-being and decrease pain. (3)
Spiritual Counseling
Long-term pain can take a toll on quality of life, which can shift perspectives in the absence of a strategy to maintain motivation. Spiritual therapy means something different to everybody, but one of the goals is to maintain connections and avoid isolation. This could look like engaging in religious or cultural practices, learning how to meditate, or practicing mindfulness. (2)
The primary intent of comprehensive pain management is to customize a treatment plan that best serves each person. What is comprehensive pain management for you? Only you and your healthcare team can answer that.
