Although any type of injury can occur during the course of a game or practice, there are some common baseball injuries to look out for. When those sprains, strains, and tears do happen, it’s good to know what you can do to recover quickly so you can return to athletic activity as quickly as possible.

1. Rotator Cuff Tears

Although rotator cuff tears are most common among pitchers, any baseball player can get this injury because of the repetitive shoulder motions required when throwing. This repetition causes wear on the muscles that surround the shoulder joint and can ultimately result in a rotator cuff tear. Although some rotator cuff injuries can recover without surgery, regaining full range of motion often requires surgical repair.   

2. MCL and ACL Tears

Knee injuries are common in baseball because of sudden starting and stopping while running, sliding to bases, and twisting the knee while keeping one foot planted. These stabilizing ligaments can become stretched or torn when forced to move in a direction that goes outside their normal range of motion. In some cases, surgery is required to repair the damaged ligaments.  

3. Muscle Sprains and Strains

Sprains or strains in the hamstrings and quadriceps are common baseball injuries because they tend to occur as a result of the explosive running that is required after hitting and between bases. Calf muscles can also be strained in this way. When hitting, strains in the oblique abdominal muscles can also occur as a result of forceful twisting.  

4. Hand and Wrist Injuries

Although baseball isn’t technically a contact sport, an athlete’s hands and wrists often come into forceful contact with other objects -- the bat, the ball, the ground, or other players. Wrist sprains and broken bones take time to heal and the recovery time depends on the severity of the injury.

5. Elbow Tendinitis

Inflammation in the elbow can occur with the repetition of swinging a bat or throwing a ball. The injury causes pain and swelling in the elbow area as the tendons that connect the upper arm and lower arm become inflamed.

How to Recover from Common Baseball Injuries

One of the common threads between all of these injuries is the occurrence of pain and swelling. Traditionally, rest, ice, compression, and elevation are used to help relieve these symptoms.
